Preface. Abhidhamma, as the term implies, is the Higher Teaching of the Buddha. It expounds the quintessence of His profound doctrine. The Dhamma, embodied in the Sutra Pitaka, is the conventional teaching (vohara desana), and the Abhidhamma is the ultimate teaching (paramattha desana).
